With Beardcember just around the corner, raising awareness and money for Bowel Cancer UK, we thought it would be a good time to discuss beards. Growing a beard requires a lot more than just growing a beard. That is, at least, if you want to look nice.
In order to grow a well-maintained beard, you need to get your grooming skills down. But what grooming skills do you need in your repertoire?
We’ve got our top four beard grooming tips to make sure that your beard is in tip-top condition and shape.
1. Invest in a Good Beard Oil
First things first, you need to make sure you invest in a good beard oil. While washing your beard helps keep it clean, it also strips it of its essential nutrients.
When shopping for beard oil, look for one that’s free of parabens, sulfates and silicones. While silicones aren’t inherently bad, they do cover your beard hairs, which can prevent your beard from getting the essential nutrients it needs.
Also, make sure you’re applying your beard oil properly. Typically, the ideal time to apply it is right after you get out of the shower. This is because a hot shower opens your pores, so you can better absorb the oil. If you have a small beard, you should only need about 3 to 4 drops, whereas larger beards will need 7 to 8.

2. Trim it Correctly
Trimming is a major component of beard grooming, so you need to make sure you’re doing it right. Here are some tips to follow for trimming your beard:
- If you’re unsure about the length you want, start with a higher guard head, then work your way down
- Only trim your beard when it’s dry
- Remember which guard length you like on your trimming device, and commit it to memory
- For spot-checking and moustache trimming, stick to facial scissors
Also, to make your beard easier to trim, make sure you’re keeping it clean and soft. And, be sure to brush it out before trimming it.
If you want your beard to look great, you can’t neglect the moustache.
To keep your moustache looking nice, we suggest doing small trims every 3 to 4 days, as this will help keep the stray hairs at bay. You should also invest in a quality wax to keep your moustache sculpted.
And when applying wax, remember that a little bit goes a long way. All you need to do is scrape a bit on your fingernail, rub it between two fingers, and then apply it and you’ll be good to go.
4. Invest in a Quality Beard Brush
Last but not least, you need to invest in a quality beard brush. A beard brush is an essential grooming product for numerous reasons.
For one, it helps distribute oils throughout your beard so that it can stay hydrated. It also helps exfoliate the skin underneath the beard so dandruff doesn’t become a problem.
It also helps to pull debris from your beard that you might have otherwise missed in the shower.
